Shuffling her feet along the dirt paved road, Kira lazily kicked a mid-sized rock in an attempt to occupy herself. The rock scatted over smaller pebbles and off further down the road. Spryly, she ran up to the gray object, lifted it off the ground and heaved it into the big blue above her. She watched as the rock went high into the air and got lost in the blinding light of the sun.
“You know Kira,” a fifteen-year-old teen with chestnut hair began, his hands placed behind his head in a lethargic manner. “What goes up must come down.”
Kira caught the rock and threw it again higher into the air, completely ignoring her younger brother’s truism. “And you’re going to hurt yourself. Again.” He added with a hint of laughter coming out of the corner of his lips.
Kira tore her eyes away from the rock, as it was once again lost in the light, and stared at her brother. “I know that, Kyle. Stop it with your stupid sayings, okay?”
She caught the rock again and threw it in the air for a third time. “I threw this darn rock in the air and I won’t get hurt—ack!” To Kira’s chagrin, the rock fell painfully on her head, leaving a growing bruise. She mumbled a barely audible curse and winced in pain.
Kyle stifled a laugh and walked beside her, his leather clad legs rubbing against each other making a rough sound. “You should learn not to contravene my words.”
Through her painful visage, she was capable of producing a sarcastic, astonished look accompanied by a short gasp. “I’m sorry your eminence. I spoke out of line. For now on, all you say is true and is of the highest caliber. Please, do not expend your sacred breath on my meager being! Allow me to carry you.”
She bowed with her head just above her knees and straightened up. After dusting her legs, she offered him a lift with her eyebrows raise and a grin stretching across her cheeks.
Kyle smirked. “Why thank you Kira, but leave that for the King. And I do believe your sarcasm and mockery is getting quite good.”
Kira smiled a genuine smile. “Thanks, I’m no longer a novice at these things. We’ve been traveling around this land for such a long time I’m bound to pick up a few things here or there. Especially because of those nasty Inns we stay at. Next time, I’m picking the place. A girl has to have a clean bath with lush towels.”
Kira gave a pensive look to the sky as she dreamt of a sumptuous bathroom with everything a girl of seventeen would need. Her face changed to disgust as she reminisced about the night before at the Tylin Inn. “Not like those tenuous rags.”
Kyle raised his index finger and a thought struck him. “Do you remember that old vagabond from last night? He was talking about this new invention called a ‘car’. He said it is a mobile square with four wheels and this thing called an ‘engine’. A zany beggar he is, it’s the 1300’s for bloody sake! What in bloody heck is an ‘engine’?” He through his arms up in exhaustion. “The king is coming up with so many different exponents.”
“Maybe we should invest in this thought. I mean, last time we were at the castle, we came a little belated to the celebration of the arriving knights. The king was furious!” Kira thought of the furor of noise and excitement that had erupted from the castle when they had arrived three days late. Mostly coming from the king. “Maybe if we donate some gold coins into this he’ll forgive us…maybe.”
Kyle shrugged. “We shouldn’t bother, the king has been in the doldrums for a while now, ever since Prince Cahol left on a distant crusade. Nothing will change his mood. But I think he’s still mad at us…”
“How long can he stay mad at his favorite knight,” Kira elbowed Kyle and then pointed to herself. “And his favorite rebel chief?” It was true the King had a soft spot for the two of them, only because he had raised them as his own children, seeing as how they were left abandoned in homely house. They were found only at the small age of two and four, completely alone in their room with broken windows that permitted minimal light and with walls that allowed the crispy night chill to enter the house and tickle their exposed skin.
“Well, we were at default for not arriving at the homecoming of the other knights, though I am one of their own, and he is holding resentment towards us. But if I know our King, and I do, he will forgive us in time. We’ve done worse than this before, remember the time all the horse were let free due to our carelessness?”
Kira smiled at the thought. Those horses sure could gallop a great distance in a small amount of time, leaving a thick trail of dust in their wake. “Yeah, I tried to pin it on Prince Cahol but with the dirt and horse hair over our clothes and faces, along with the mud, we might as well had ‘We did it!’ emblazoned over our heads!”
“If we keep this up, the King will surely expire us in due time.”
Kira shook her head and smiled. “Nah, he loves us too much.”
“Maybe you’re right.” Kyle stretched his slender hand over his eyes and scanned ahead. “Hey, there’s a town up ahead. If we hurry we can make it before the sun falls.”
Rushing ahead of his older sister, Kyle charged down the road with a new burst of energy with Kira tagging closely behind.
(Agh…did I use the vocabulary correctly? I like writing [creative writing] and I want to know if my writing is any good or if I’m using words correctly…)
